Our Partnerships
FermiForward was formed by the University of Chicago (UChicago) and Universities Research Association, Inc. (URA) for the sole purpose of becoming the Management and Operating (M&O) contractor of Fermilab for DOE’s Office of Science (SC). Leveraging the expertise of our integrated subcontractors Amentum and L&A, FermiForward is working to identify improvements so that Fermilab can continue to excel in great scientific discoveries through effective, efficient, safe, and secure operations.
UChicago brings directly relevant scientific leadership experience to Fermilab. Over the last five years alone, Fermilab and UChicago scientists have collaboratively produced over 620 publications—representing approximately a third of the laboratory’s output—many of which are field-defining. Examples of UChicago’s leadership include the CMBS4 project, the Chicago Quantum Exchange (CQE), and serving as the M&O contractor of Argonne.
URA, as Fermilab’s founding M&O contractor, has deep connections to the high energy physics (HEP) community through long-established relationships with Fermilab’s user communities (e.g., the Fermi Users Executive Committee) and over 90 major research universities. These member universities employ and train a significant proportion of particle physicists in the U.S. and 84% of Fermilab’s university Users come from these URA member universities.
Our integrated subcontractors, Amentum and Longenecker & Associates: A Geosyntec Company (L&A), bring years of National Laboratory (NL) experience and histories of delivering and enabling operational excellence across the DOE enterprise. These critical partners will provide personnel in a wide range of laboratory operation functions that include project management, business management, safety, procurement, and contractor assurance.
